In writing The Armed Man, Karl Jenkins has drawn on a number of texts from different sources. Some choral movements are in English, and others are in Latin and French. The Latin movements comprise the Kyrie, Sanctus, Benedictus and Agnus Dei from the Mass; the French is the use of the popular medieval song L'homme armé, from which Jenkins' work takes its title.

The armed man must be feared. Everywhere it has been decreed that every man should arm himself with an iron coat of mail
In addition, the second movement comprises the Adhan, the Muslim call to prayer. Choir and orchestra are tacet in this movement, but a translation of the Adhan is available on the Answering Islam website.
